Recent CAS graduate selected for prestigious internship

TAMPA, Fla. – Krista Gutierrez, a 2016 graduate of the University of South Florida College of Arts and Sciences, was selected to participate in the prestigious 2016 Arthur R. Marshall Foundation for the Everglades Summer Intern Program. Only three interns were chosen.

The Marshall Summer Intern Program for undergraduate and post-graduate students is a 10-week, science based internship, focused on Everglades ecology and restoration. It focuses on exploratory field experiences and mentor lectures.

As a geology major, Gutierrez learned topographic, coastal and well surveying, and related technical training. She also attended three summer field camps: one in Idaho, studying structural geology; coastal field surveying and observations in Florida; hydrology in Georgia and South Carolina; and analyzing sink hole and bore holes and well surveying in Florida.

Born in Pahokee, Fla., Gutierrez grew up in the nearby area of South Bay and Clewiston. She will attend the graduate school at USF in August to pursue a master’s degree in global sustainability with a water concentration.

“I pursued this internship for the sole reason of what the Arthur R. Marshall foundation stands for,” she said. "I truly believe in the value of the Everglades, not only from an ecological standpoint, but also as a resident in the South Florida area. Finding the balance between what's environmentally and economically right is definitely a challenge. I am proud to be a part of this wonderful program.”
