George Takei to headline Frontier Forum lecture series

TAMPA, Fla. -- George Takei, Dr. Bennet Omalu and Laura Schroff make up the star-studded lineup for the 2015-2016 Frontier Forum lecture series, hosted by the University of South Florida College of Arts and Sciences.

Takei will be speaking at the USF Sun Dome at 8 p.m. on Monday, April 18, 2016. Tickets will go on sale Oct. 2 to the general public. The first 3,000 USF students will be admitted for free. Takei, whose popularity spans generations, is known for his role in “Star Trek” and for his presence on Facebook and Twitter. Takei’s story goes where few stories have gone before. From a childhood spent with his family wrongfully imprisoned in a Japanese Internment Camp during World War II to becoming one of the country’s leading figures in the fight for social justice, Takei remains a powerful voice on issues ranging from politics to pop culture.

Dr. Bennet Omalu, a leading expert on concussions and long-term brain damage in NFL players, will speak at the David A. Straz Center for the Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3, 2015. His life’s work is being made into a major motion picture, “Concussion,” starring Will Smith that is slated for a Christmas Day release. Omalu’s lecture is free and open to the public.

Laura Schroff, The New York Times best-selling author of “An Invisible Thread” will speak at the David A. Straz Center for the Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2015. Schroff will share her story about meeting an 11-year-old panhandler named Maurice, and the unlikely friendship that changed both of their lives. Schroff, whose lecture is free and open to the public, will challenge audience members to change lives through small acts of kindness.

The Frontier Forum lecture series is presented by the USF Phi Beta Kappa Alumni Faculty and sponsored by the USF Office of the Provost and the USF College of Arts and Sciences. Since 2010, the Frontier Forum has hosted several notable speakers such as Jane Goodall, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Michio Kaku and Rory Kennedy.
