English professor recognized for scholarly excellence

TAMPA, Fla. -- A University of South Florida creative writing professor was one of 11 faculty members honored by USF for oustanding scholarship and research.

Associate Professor Ira Sukrungruang, M.F.A., received a USF Outstanding Research Achievement Award. This award is part of an open competition judged by the USF System Research Council to underscore the professional recognition that USF faculty have received from national and international peers during the previous calendar year.

Sukrungruang joined the Department of English in 2008 as an assistant professor and was promoted to associate professor in 2011.

He boasts quite a lengthy publication record which includes essays, poems and short stories most of which have appeared in literary journals. Sukrungruang also has penned a memoir entitled “Talk Thai: The Adventures of Buddhist Boy” (2010) and, more recently, “In Thailand It Is Night,” a collection of poems which earned Sukrungruang an Anita Schraff Award in 2013. Sukrungruang’s next book, “Southside Buddhist: Essays,” is already in press.

Sukrungruang has been invited as a Visiting Writer to universities as far away as Australia and Hong Kong. For more information and links to his expanding body of work visit Sukrungruang’s website.
