CAS student receives Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship

TAMPA, Fla. -- Monica Velasco of the University of South Florida has been awarded a Gilman Scholarship to study abroad in Beijing and Qingdao, China during the summer 2013 semester. She will be studying Mandarin and Chinese culture with USF’s Chinese Learning in the Culture Tier 1 program. Velasco is one of just 700 students to study abroad during the summer with the Gilman scholarship.

Velasco is an Honors College freshman majoring in biochemistry and minoring in Chinese. She hopes to go to medical school, pursue a career as a pediatrician, and integrate Eastern and Western approaches to medicine. She has been involved in Reach Out and Read, a program that combines shadowing doctors and reading to pediatric patients.

The Office of National Scholarships identifies, recruits, and mentors high achieving students to apply for national merit scholarships across all disciplines. The scholarships and fellowships are for creative, motivated, and academically strong students who are leaders in and out of the classroom.

Gilman Scholars receive up to $5,000 to apply towards their study abroad program costs. Recipients of the scholarship have the opportunity to gain a better understanding of other cultures, countries, languages, and economies -- making them better prepared to assume leadership roles within government and the private sector. All recipients are required to carry out a Follow-on Project to share information about the Gilman program within their university and community.
