Ph.D. student to discuss hurricanes and climate research

TAMPA, Fla. -- The University of South Florida will host the presentation “Analyzing the Variability of Atlantic Tropical Cyclone Activity during ENSO Neutral Conditions” at 2 p.m. on Nov. 8, 2011, at the Patel Center Room 136. The West Central Florida Chapter of the American Meteorological Society (WCFLAMS) and the Environmental Science Policy Program at USF is sponsoring the presentation.

The presentation will be led by Ph.D. student David Roache, who recently received the WCFLAMS Dewey M. Stowers Merit Award. He will be speaking about the relationship between global hurricane activity and large-scale climate factors.

The research looks at cooling and warming trends to determine whether high or low activity tropical seasons occur in the Atlantic. Roache’s research also is determining whether these trends have ties to intense hurricane landfall rates along the U.S. Gulf of Mexico coastline.
