USF professor wins research grant for his work on human sexuality

TAMPA, Fla. -- Every year since 2002, the Cornell University Library awards the Zwickler Memorial Research Grant to researchers on their work on human sexuality. David K. Johnson, an associate professor of history at the University of South Florida is the 2011 recipient of this grant.

The Cornell University Library boasts the world-renowned human sexuality collection; Johnson, a previous recipient of the award in 2006, has access to this collection, which helps him further his research on human sexuality.

“The sexuality collection at Cornell is such an amazing collection of materials, it is truly unique,” Johnson said. “There is no other institution that is collecting this kind of stuff.”

Upon being awarded the Zwickler Memorial Research Grant, researchers work in the library’s Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections. Access to these collections will help Johnson complete his upcoming book project, “Buying Gay: Consumer Culture and Identity Formation before Stonewall."

“I have received a couple of other small research grants that will help me work on the book as well,” Johnson said.

The Phil Zwickler Memorial Grant is named after filmmaker and journalist Phil Zwickler, who passed away in 1991 after complications from AIDS. He documented the AIDS crisis and the struggle for gays and lesbians fight for gay rights.
